Club
History
The
SunCoast Reef Rovers were formed in February of 1997 with Elaine Brosnan serving
as President, Bill Willson as Vice-President, and Fred Hind as the initial
Treasurer. The first three
formation meetings were held in a local dive shop in Venice before moving to our
permanent location in Nokomis. The
Reef Rovers were the first organization to contract for regular use of the Nokomis Community Center.
The
purpose for creating this organization was to bring together possible dive
buddies and promote local and semi-local diving opportunities. Numerous
divers indicated a lack of available time or resources to participate in
extended dive trips. Our club endeavors to provide a calendar of regular
weekend dive opportunities at reasonable expense.
In
May of 1999, the SunCoast Reef Rovers completed their first dive trip outside
the USA with a week long excursion to Bonaire off the coast of Venezuela.
While continuing to promote local diving, the club will also organize one or two
extended trips for members who are interested.
